It took a few minutes to consider if this post is more lame then c-freedom's bull-shih-tzu proselytizing posts. Yeah, we all get it the play- the Church is a whore, blah, blah, blah. But why not let the Catholics do what they do in peace? If you are not one why bother with the name calling? Why bother with this post at all?

Maybe it is more lame but they are a canonizing a man more deserving of incarceration than canonization. And to pretend that because I'm not a catholic it does not concern me is a pretty facile understanding of the role of "the" church in all our lives.

My antipathy toward John Paul II stems from my time in Kenya during 1985, the summer of International Woman's Conference in Nairobi. I was in Kenya that summer (unlike UNC athletes, I actually learned and used my Swahili) and the Kenyan government paved a road from Nairobi way out to an area of the Masai Mara so that JP could drive there in the pope mobile to bless an albino rhino. This rhino had been raised for years by guys wearing replicas of the big silly pope hat so it wouldn't freak when JP got there. I was quite impressed by this use of scarce resources, especially during a summer when JP again emphasized the "unique" and subordinate role of women and stressed that condoms did not prevent AIDS and that abstinence was the key. Quite a healthy and productive message for sub-Saharan Africa and all of humanity. Good thing AIDS came under control due to his message. But that's all just fun and games and may not warrant incarceration. However, his role in covering up and protecting clergy of sexual abuse of children warrants him a place in the burning fire where the guy with the pointy stick pokes him for all eternity. I know folks will discount the same due to the publication:

Then again, I think Mother Teresa was a fraud.

Fair enough point on the sex abuse issue.

Will agree to disagree on the aids issue.
